Strong Demand for Sodium Ion Battery Current Collector After 2023

Sodium ion battery current collector is a structural component used in sodium ion batteries to collect current for external output and as a carrier for positive and negative electrode materials. The performance of sodium ion battery collector materials directly affects the coulombic efficiency, rate performance, cycle stability, etc., and battery aluminum foil is one of its important materials.

At present, lithium-ion batteries are the mainstream product in the consumer battery, power battery and energy storage battery markets. Global lithium resources are limited, and driven by the development of industries such as electronics, electric vehicles and energy storage, the global demand for lithium-ion batteries continues to grow. The pressure on lithium supply is increasing and prices are rising steadily.

The working principle and structural composition of sodium-ion batteries are basically the same as those of lithium-ion batteries, and sodium salts are used to replace lithium salts. The world’s sodium resources are abundant, with a sufficient supply of sodium and low prices. Sodium ion batteries can be expanded on a large scale at low cost, and have better rate performance, temperature adaptability, and safety. Therefore, they have attracted capital attention.

In Li-ion batteries, the positive collector uses battery aluminum foil. Due to the reaction of aluminum with lithium at low potential, the negative collector of Li-ion batteries must use battery copper foil. The positive collector of sodium-ion batteries also uses battery aluminum foil. Since aluminum and sodium do not react at low potentials, the negative collector of sodium-ion batteries can also use battery aluminum foil.

Compared with copper, aluminum has a lower price. Both the positive and negative current collectors of sodium-ion batteries use battery aluminum foil, which reduces the cost of current collector materials per KWh of battery, further reducing the cost of sodium-ion batteries and improving their competitive advantage. At present, each GWh of lithium-ion batteries requires 300-600 tons of battery aluminum foil, and the demand for sodium-ion batteries is twice that of lithium-ion batteries. It is estimated that each GWh of sodium-ion batteries requires 600-1200 tons of battery aluminum foil.

Driven by the development of the new energy industry, the demand for power batteries and energy storage batteries in China has increased rapidly. The shipment volume of power batteries alone is expected to exceed 1200GWh by 2025, which will increase the demand for fluid collection. From 2023 to 2025, China’s sodium ion battery production lines will be gradually implemented. It is expected that by 2025, the demand for sodium ion batteries in China will reach 200GWh, and the outbreak of sodium ion battery industry will further drive the growth of collector demand.
